Extensions can be made up by anyone for any purpose; there are no standards and just a few common-use extensions (e.g., .EXE file executable files or .TXT for text files). It's therefore not unusual that you might not be able to find a particular extension here. Don't let that discourage you, however. Below are some research tips to help you...

• First, try to go to the source...
  • Where did you get the file? The source of the file should have some idea about what it might relate to. If an individual by E-mail write them back and ask; if a web site, find out what sort of site it was and what they sell.
• Look to see where the file is...
  • What directory/folder is the file installed in? Often the folder name will give some clue about what file it's associated with.
  • Look at the date/time of the file and then look for a group of files with the same or similar date/time. If found, it's likely the questionable file will be associated with that group.
• See if the file is referenced anywhere...
  • Is the extension in the registry? Using REGEDIT (with great care!) you can search for specific strings in the registry and see where they are installed and perhaps what resource they are associated with.
  • Also check for file associations. Click on MyComputer then select View and Folder Options. Select the File Types tab and scroll down looking for the extension.
